Children's Day is recognized on various days in many places around the world, to honor children globally. It was first proclaimed by the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in 1925 and then established universally in 1954 to protect an "appropriate" day. Major global variants include a Universal Children's Day on November 20, by United Nations recommendation.
Children's Day is often celebrated on other days as well. International Day for Protection of Children, observed in many countries as Children's Day on June 1 since 1950, was established by the Women's International Democratic Federation on its congress in Moscow.
India celebrates Children’s Day on 14th November every year. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, was born on 14th November 1889 and he loved kids. Children fondly called him Chacha Nehru (Uncle Nehru). Seeing the bright future of the nation, he accentuated on the importance of bestowing love and affection to the kids. This is the reason why India selected his birthday to celebrate Children’s Day.
Children’s Day is for every child of the country. On this special day, different functions are organized in schools and other educational institutions where children are involved. This is celebrated at residences as well that have kids. Children take part in the cultural programs held in their schools on this day. Teachers also perform on this day to make it a special event for the students.
The Central and the State governments take keen interest to celebrate this day. Hence, they organize film festivals and show films on children on 14th November every year. Though this festival is celebrated for and with the kids, it is extremely enjoyable for all those who are engaged as well. This is a day when kids are allowed to engage in fun and frolic without any restriction. To end the celebration, the kids are given meals and gifts from their educational institutions and parents.

Children take part in many sports organized for them. Many people in India celebrate this day as Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday.
